Kajetanowicz: defending ERC title will be tougher than winning it

Kajetan Kajetanowicz reckons defending his FIA European Rally Championship title could be even harder than winning it in the first place.

The LOTOS Rally Team driver was speaking after slipping to second place on the final day of the season-opening Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés last week.

"It's one thing to attack, another to defend," said the Ford Fiesta R5-driving Pole. "The strong performance on the rally from Alexey [Lukyanuyk] and Mads Østberg just goes to show how tough the opposition will be this year. And we don't know who is coming next either. I have a very tricky job to try and keep the title."

Kajetanowicz will head to next month's Circuit of Ireland Rally with 29 points in the bag and he knows that he cannot afford any more mistakes in order to sustain his title challenge after he set his tyre pressures too high on Gran Canaria.

"The strongest challenge is yet to come, so I have to try and be perfect everywhere," he pointed out. "My lack of experience in the Canary Islands showed, and I made a mistake that meant I was lucky to stay in the rally. I could easily have come away with zero points."
