‘Crazy’ Alonso returns to fight for ERC2 title glory
Juan Carlos Alonso will continue to commute from Argentina to chase success in the FIA European Rally Championship’s ERC2 division this season.
After winning his class on the season-opening Azores Rallye last year, Alonso suffered a spate of bad luck and dropped out of the title reckoning as a result.
However, he’s determined to hit back and win the ERC’s production category with a programme of at least five ERC2 events.
He said: “I’m a bit crazy because the economic situation in our country is very difficult. But I am here to try to win the championship, that is our reason. I think it is the last chance so we try to do the best.”
Alonso will continue to compete in a Proracing-prepared Mitsubishi Lancer with co-driver and compatriot Juan Pablo Monasterolo.
“We were really unlucky last year but we showed a good performance with the car and good speed. I think it’s possible for us to win the championship but we need to fight.”
Sergey Remennik/Marina Danilova and Luís Pimentel/Nuno Moura will battle Alonso/Monasterolo for ERC2 honours in the Azores.
