Zawada positive on ERC Junior title bid

Aleks Zawada says there were "a lot of positives" after his bid for the FIA ERC Junior Under 27 Championship - and the 100,000 euros prize fund - ultimately ended in disappointment in Latvia earlier this month.

Zawada was one of four drivers in the fight for the ERC Junior crown starting Rally Liepāja but he struggled to match the pace of his rivals in a hired Peugeot 208 R2 and had to settle for fifth place on the gravel event and fourth in the final championship reckoning.

"It's been a pretty good season for us," said the London-born Pole. "For one rally we were leading the championship so there are a lot of positives. Unfortunately, we couldn't quite take it to the end. Two DNFs didn't help and there were rallies we could have won or definitely fought for wins. But we're happy to be here. We're at the end of the last rally and I want to thank everybody who helped me out, all the companies, all my friends, all my family, all my team because there have been a lot of people who have made this possible.

"There's been a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifices and I want to thank my wife and my son who put up with me coming away and it's not easy. We definitely want to continue next year and maybe try to step up. ERC Junior Under 28 would be amazing but as we've had financial issues this year I don't know if it's going to be doable. But we're going to do our best and hopefully we can do that and be a bit higher up in the future."
