Korený and Hilgenhövel share ETCC Super 1600 Cup race spoils
While Niklas Mackshin was busy winning the FIA ETCC Super 1600 Cup title for a second season*, teenagers Tomáš Korený and Kevin Hilgenhövel shared the class wins in two closely-fought races at Magny-Cours.
In Race 1, 16-year-old Czech Korený claimed the spoils in a thrilling finish ahead of Germany's Kevin Hilgenhövel, 17, with Mackshin third, before Hilgenhövel took the honours in Race 2 with Mackshin second and Korený completing the podium in his Ford Fiesta.
With Korený delayed by two slow-starting Super 2000 Cup drivers in Race 1, Peugeot 207 driver Hilgenhövel moved in front but later slid wide on a patch of oil, which allowed Korený to take top spot. The pair made light contact on the final lap, leaving Korený needing a new front bumper for Race 2. Andreas Rinke, Ksenia Niks and Daniel Niermann also scored points.
German Rinke and Ukrainian Niks were fourth and fifth in Race 2 but there was frustration for Niermann, whose race ended in a gravel trap on lap three.
