ERC Junior Kasperczyk: “I saw this hill, I was really scared”

Tomasz Kasperczyk has spoken about the crash that ended his challenge for FIA ERC Junior Under 28 Championship points on Rally Islas Canarias last Friday morning.

Kasperczyk hit trouble on a right-hand bend approximately 16 kilometres from the start of the 25.13-kilometre San Mateo stage when he experienced a problem braking.

His Tiger Energy Drink Rally Team Ford Fiesta charged into a guardrail, which fortunately held and prevented the car from plunging down the hillside and saving Kasperczyk and co-driver Damian Syty from possible injury.

"It was really strange for me," said the Polish driver. "I put the brake [on] but nothing happened, I had no pressure and I am not happy because I was expecting a good result here. But I am really, really lucky I don't fall down because [the drop] was really deep. After a few minutes, when I got out of the car, I see this hill and I was really, really scared. The car was not like new, it was broken, but we are okay, that is the most important thing."

His next scheduled event is his home round, Rally Rzeszów in August, when he'll be hoping for an upturn in fortune following back-to-back retirements. "This race was very short for us and now we are waiting for the next rally."

Kasperczyk's crash, which can be viewed by clicking here, has become an online hit although the Pole admits he would prefer his driving to do the talking. "I am happy a little bit because of this but I would prefer less views and better driver."
