WTCR Volkswagen Golf GTI gets a boost

Volkswagen Motorsport has vowed to put a "greater emphasis" behind its Golf GTI TCR in order to fall in line with its newly announced competition strategy.

The customer-focused project, which Mehdi Bennani and Rob Huff will represent in the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, has proved a big success for the German make and Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets has firm plans for this to continue.

"In the future, we will place even greater emphasis on Volkswagen products," said the Belgian. "The Golf GTI TCR is already an important ambassador for the brand in many racing series around the world, and we are pursuing the same goal with the new Polo GTI R5 [rally car]."

He continued: "Both cars are not only attractive propositions for professional customer teams, but also represent top-class cars for talented youngsters."

Marrakech in Morocco hosts the opening WTCR triple-header from 7-8 April.
