Why six ERC points could be crucial for Kajetanowicz

Kajetan Kajetanowicz's second FIA European Rally Championship defence didn't get off to the start he'd hoped for the six points he scored on the Azores Airlines Rallye could yet prove decisive in his bid for a record-breaking third consecutive crown.

After crashing out on the opening leg in the mid-Atlantic earlier this month, Kajetanowicz returned for the final day with the aim of scoring as many leg bonus points as possible in the LOTOS Rally Team Ford Fiesta R5 he shares with co-driver Jarek Baran.

"This was a fantastic day, our first points and I am happy that I quickly regained confidence after yesterday's mistake," said Kajetanowicz afterwards. "Today everything worked perfectly. The fight in the fog was really nice, it always brings a lot of emotions. Our competitors pushed hard but we won quite a lot of stages and this is important, as our pace was very nice. I am happy to leave with points, wiser and for sure stronger."

Kajetanowicz, who now has 103 ERC stage wins to his name, is ninth in the ERC standings heading to next month's Rally Islas Canarias. Crucially, his chief title rival, Alexey Lukyanuk also failed to go the distance in the Azores and is one point ahead of Kajetanowicz in the table.
