When ERC Junior Zawada achieved the unthinkable
Aleks Zawada marked his return to the FIA European Rally Championship with second place in the ERC Junior Under 27 category - although he feared his challenge was over following a tough start to the Azores Airlines Rallye earlier this month.
Zawada has seemingly dropped out of contention with an off on Thursday afternoon but hit back to claim the runner-up spoils behind Chris Ingram.
He said: "After Thursday when we had lost two and a half minutes I would not have believed we could have come second so it's amazing, I am completely and utterly chuffed. It's really sad that Jari's [Huttunen] rally finished 200 metres before the finish but you win some, you lose some. This time I got a present and second place is a good start to the season."
Zawada was competing in the Azores in a hired Peugeot but will be back in his MSZ Racing Opel ADAM R2 for next month's Rally Islas Canarias.
"My next event I'll be in the Opel and I'll be on Tarmac, which is my preferred surface," said the Polish driver. "It's a rally that I've already done before and the other lads haven't so I think I might have a slight advantage so I'll be hoping to capitalise on that."
