Lukyanuk enters ERC Ypres Rally

Alexey Lukyanuk will look to take the lead of the FIA European Rally Championship on the Kenotek by CID Lines Ypres Rally, having entered the classic Belgian event thanks to some additional support.

Lukyanuk has been competing under the colours of Russian Performance Motorsport and the Elementy.ru science project so far in 2016, but he and co-driver Alexey Arnautov's trip to Belgium has been made possible by the support of a businessman who would prefer to remain anonymous: "I just want to help guys in such a situation, I don't need to advertise myself or company," he has said.

The Russian driver commented: "I do not have enough words to explain how grateful I am to Russian Performance Motorsport team, Elementy.ru project and Boris Zimin for our successful cooperation, starting 2014. It is because of their support that we won the Estonian Championship 2014 and got a chance to continue our program in ERC. I hope it is just a pause in our relations and we will have a lot of events ahead."

After finishing second on last weekend's Azores Airlines Rallye, Lukyanuk sits second in the ERC standings, just 15 points behind Kajetan Kajetanowicz. The Pole won't make the trip to Ypres, handing Lukyanuk a golden opportunity in the title race.

It will the first time Lukyanuk has competed in Ypres, but he has won on his last two starts on asphalt - in Valais at the end of 2015 and the Canary Islands at the start of this season - and had no prior knowledge of either event.

Entries for the Kenotek by CID Lines Ypres Rally close today (Tuesday 7 June).
