Life in the WTCC VIP seats good for Coronel

Tom Coronel said he had the perfect vantage point to savour the thrilling battle for victory in the Main Race at FIA WTCC Race of Argentina last weekend.

Coronel claimed race silver in second place after Norbert Michelisz and Yvan Muller - running ahead of him on the road - clashed in their battle for the runner-up spot, handing the position to Dutchman Coronel in his Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1.

And that was after erstwhile leader Michelisz had doggedly fended off José María López's persistence advances for first position.

"In the first few laps I saw them fighting with Michelisz," ROAL Motorsport-run Coronel explained. "I knew López was going to try to win this race. I understand the state of mind of a racing driver racing in his home country so I knew it was going to be a hot fight. I just stayed there, 20 metres back to keep my tyres right, and I saw some really good action, really good racing, I saw some touching, I was in the VIP row to see everything and it looked all nice and somehow two disappeared and I finished P2. It's nice to be on the podium and to bring the trophy home."

As well as claiming second overall in the Main Race, Coronel clinched the WTCC Trophy laurels for the third time in 2016.
