It’s a family affair for WTCC rookie Ehrlacher
FIA World Touring Car Championship race winner Yann Ehrlacher might be a Macau rookie but that's not the case for mother Cathy and uncle Yvan.
Cathy Muller finished P12 in the Macau F3 Grand Prix in 1983, while Yvan Muller, her younger brother, is a double WTCC Race of Macau winner, meaning their advice and knowledge will be even more important than normal.
Although the 21-year-old's Circuito da Guia experience amounts to time spent on a simulator and attempting to qualify for the RaceRoom eSports WTCC finale tonight, Ehrlacher has drawn comparisons with the Vila Real street track in Portugal.
"Vila Real was already quite tough but they say Macau is one step further in everything," said Ehrlacher. "My mother raced there in F3 and told me it's a mythical place and my uncle raced there many times in the WTCC and I remember waking up at 4am to watch on TV when he was fighting for the world championship. Maybe I can have a taxi ride with Yvan to look at the walls, the lines, the bumps."
He continued: "I understand some of the corners are a bit blind so it's all about being confident with the car and learning the track as quickly as possible. Sorry for the expression but you really need to bring your balls with you because it's a big challenge for a rookie driver and it's going to be interesting. I will learn a lot."
