Griebel still top in ERC Junior Under 28 title fight

Marijan Griebel continues to lead the FIA ERC Junior Under 28 Championship - and the race for a World Rally Car prize drive in 2018 - despite a testing Rally Islas Canarias last week.

Griebel, class winner on the Azores Airlines Rallye last month, had to settle for third in the category for young stars in R5 cars on the Spanish island.

Throughout the event, the German voiced his frustration about his lack of outright speed, which he put down to his absence of knowledge of the challenging stages on Gran Canaria and his lack of familiarity driving his BRR ŠKODA Fabia R5 on asphalt.

"For the second and third last stages I was quite satisfied with the times, they were a lot better than before," said the talented Griebel, last year's ERC Junior champion. "It could have been a better weekend but I am happy with the podium and what counts is the points for the championship and third place is not so bad."

Griebel's title advantage over new second place driver Pepe López is now three points with Nikolay Gryazin and newcomer Sylvain Michel next up.
