Former olympian Llovera to compete in RX lites

Andorra's Albert Llovera will make his debut in the FIA World Rallycross Championship supporting RX Lites Cup this weekend at Hell in Norway.

The experienced rally and Dakar driver will drive a Lotto Team Lites car, run alongside FIA European Rallycross Championship Supercar racers Krzysztof Holowczyc and Martin Kaczmarski in three RX Lites events this season, in Norway, Sweden and Barcelona.

While Llovera will not only become the first Andorran driver to compete in the championship, he will also be the first driver in the RX Lites Cup to race using hand controls. Llovera is a former Olympic alpine skier, but a serious accident in 1985 left him paralysed from the waist down. The controls in the RX Lites car will be similar to those used in his various cars in the WRC and for completing the infamous Dakar rally.

"Rallycross is all about explosive races with great cars and a lot of spectators. I like to compete and try different disciplines to see how far I can get. Even though my disability means I am only driving with my hands, I like to find my limits and to see what I can achieve," he said. "I have no idea how I will do, with the mix of tarmac and gravel I will have a lot of work driving only with my hands."

Llovera tested the adapted car for the first time in Poland last week.

"The test was very good. I've found a great team, they are very nice and technically very good. Krzysztof helped me with the driving and the setup of the car. There are similarities with WRC in terms of driving and my experience in rally could help."
