Crashing like Kubica: ERC Junior Černý explains Rally Islas Canarias exit

Jan Černý crashed out of round two of the FIA European Rally Championship on the same corner where Robert Kubica's bid to win Rally Islas Canarias in 2013 came to an end.

Černý was trying to claw back time lost during Friday morning's loop following changes at midday service to improve the set-up of his ACCR Czech Team ŠKODA Fabia R5 when he went off the road in dramatic fashion on the 25.13-kilometre San Mateo stage.

Neither Černý nor co-driver Petr Černohorský were uninjured when their car plunged down a hillside after tearing through a road-side guardrail. However, the Fabia suffered extensive damage, forcing their second consecutive DNF in the ERC Junior Under 28 Championship.

"This race was not good for us as we have crashed in same corner where Robert Kubica crashed in 2013," Černý explained. "In the second half of the stage we started to catch [José] Suárez, who had some issues with his car. I have lost concentration and on one place I went 10-15 metres too late on the brakes. It is very sad for us and not a good start in the championship. But we will continue fighting."

Of his Friday morning, Černý said: "Our speed before the crash was not bad and we were supposed to climb up in the results. It was not easy for us, this type of Tarmac is completely different from what we know in Czech Republic. In service before SS4 we have changed the set-up and everything went well on the stage."
