Carey: No new deal for Silverstone, but...

New F1 chairman and CEO Chase Carey says Liberty Media is prepared to work with Silverstone to make the British Grand Prix a success, although he stresses they will not renegotiate the current deal.

The British Racing Drivers' Club, which owns the circuit, circulated a letter to members before Christmas warning consideration must be given to activating it 'break clause' that would see it host the event for the final time in 2019 as otherwise it would put the track at 'potentially ruinous risk'.

Carey has already said this week that he wants to keep the British Grand Prix and he has also now come out and emphasised that Liberty want to be "good partners" with the BRDC.

"We are not going to renegotiate with Silverstone, but we will work with them to be good partners," Carey confirmed to The Mail on Sunday

"The British Grand Prix is an important race in the calendar. Although we want to stage new races in 'destination' cities such as London, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, we recognise the European foundations of the sport and want to continue that tradition.

"With Silverstone, we want to help them promote the race. When there is an NFL game in London, the shops in Regent Street are full of it. We want to do that sort of thing with the British Grand Prix and also make the event broader, with the race at the centre of a full weekend show."

His comments come after BRDC president Derek Warwick hailed Liberty Media's takeover of F1 as "positive" for the British GP and Silverstone.
