Blancpain Monza: Race red-flagged after multi-car startline shunt

A multi-car startline accident has resulted in the opening round of the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup at Monza being red-flagged after two laps.

At least a dozen cars were involved in an accident that left seven stranded wrecks on the start-finish, partially blocking the track.

The accident was triggered when second-row starter Guy Smith's M-Sport Bentley Continental GT3 came into contact with the Grasser Lamborghini Huracan GT3 of Ezequiel Perez Companc on the run to the first chicane.

The Lamborghini got on the grass and spun in front of the pack, resulting in the pile-up.

The safety car was deployed immediately and, after one lap behind the course vehicle, the red flag was shown.

Cars taken out in the incident included the RJN Nissan GT-R MISMO GT3 driven by Lucas Ordonez and Dean Stoneman's Strakka McLaren 650S GT3.

The race then restarted behind the safety car after a stoppage of approximately 15 minutes.

None of the drivers involved in the crash were injured.

The race was led by Miguel Molina's SMP Racing Ferrari 488 GTE from Smith prior to the stoppage.
