Blancpain Monza: Pier Guidi claims last-gasp pole in Ferrari

New Ferrari factory driver Alessandro Pier Guidi snatched a last-gasp pole position for the opening round of the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup at Monza.

The Italian jumped to the top of the timesheets in his AF Corse-run Spirit of Race Ferrari 488 GTE with a 1m47.423s lap completed after the chequered flag had fallen in final qualifying.

Pier Guidi initially bumped fellow Ferrari driver Davide Rigon in the SMP Racing 488 GTE, which had held pole with a 1m47.510s when the flag fell at the end of the 15-minute session.

Rigon was subsequently pushed down to third courtesy of a 1m47.485s from Norbert Siedler in the best of the Grasser Lamborghini Huracan GT3s.

Pier Guidi, who races for the factory AF Ferrari squad in the World Endurance Championship, said: "It think it was the best moment to do the time, to be honest.

"I had traffic on my first set of tyres and decided to put a second set on. I made a mistake on my first lap, but my second one was clean."

Fourth place was taken by Steven Kane in the fastest of the factory M-Sport Bentley Continental GT3s with a 1m47.603s.

Mirko Bortolotti ended up fifth in in the second of the Grasser Lambos with a 1m47.691s.

Sportscar newcomer Matt Parry claimed sixth place for Nissan in the best of the RJN team's GT-R NISMO GT3S.

Pro-Am pole went to Jonny Adam in the TF Sport-Run Oman Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage V12.

The first 32 cars qualified within a second around the 3.6-mile Monza circuit.
