Big boost for former ERC Junior champion Bergkvist
The FIA ERC Junior Championship's position as the ultimate training ground for future stars of world rallying has once again been highlighted with confirmation of former champion Emil Bergkvist landing a WRC2 drive and testing opportunities with Citroën in 2017.
Co-driven by fellow Sweden Joakim Sjöberg, Bergkivst will campaign a J-Motorsport-run Citroën DS3 R5 in WRC2 in addition to an unspecified testing programme with Citroën Racing and selected Belgian championship evens.
"It is the second year we are driving for J-Motorsport, and it is the first time we run two seasons together with a team," said Bergkvist. "So it feels good to get into a season and be familiar with all of the team, mechanics and the car. The car has also been developed, which feels good. "Our goal is to be the best Citroën in every race and fight for podium finishes WRC2. But most important is to finish every rally."
Driving for Opel, Bergkvist followed Stéphane Lefebvre by winning the ERC Junior title, a feat he achieved in 2015.
