Best breakfast key to Sesks’ ERC pace on Tarmac debut

Mārtiņš Sesks belied his absence of asphalt experience to come within 10 seconds of FIA ERC Junior Under 27 Championship victory on Rally Islas Canarias.

Sesks had never competed on Tarmac before his trip to Gran Canaria but shrugged off that potential handicap to finish runner-up to Diogo Gago by 8.9s following an intense fight for class honours in his Opel ADAM R2.

"It was quite good for the first time here, my first time on Tarmac," said the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team driver. "I felt good on Friday morning. I had a good breakfast, it was nice sunny upside eggs with the bacon and maybe that was the key to it. But really it's all about pacenotes and feeling comfortable and it was working well. The car was perfect and Opel Motorsport did a great job."

Latvian Sesks actually led the division at the overnight halt on Friday but would ultimately have to settle for second place to his Portuguese rival Gago.

"We didn't have the same confidence on Saturday morning as we did on Friday," the ERC Junior Experience graduate explained. "We just didn't have that good working as a crew on the stage. A bit of pacenote things, a bit of my driving, being too aggressive in some places and that's tough."
